Alan Rusbridger Esq
Editor – The Guardian
London
Dear Alan Rusbridger,
Disturbing front page this week (“Iran’s secret plan for summer offensive to force US out of Iraq”, Guardian, May 22).
What is your motivation – your reason why – for publishing such obvious, politically-motivated US propaganda ?
I am reminded of the ‘Encounter’ magazine scandal of the late 1960’s, in which its British co-editor – Stephen Spender – immediately resigned after it was revealed the American CIA were covertly funding the British magazine.
Would you resign, Mr Rusbridger, if it was revealed the CIA (and/or one of its ’stakeholders’) were covertly funding your Guardian newspaper ?
In the belief you will not reply to this emailed ‘letter blog’, please would you register this as an official reader complaint.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Richard W. Symonds M.C.I.P.D.

Dear Richard, Thank you for your email to Simon Tisdall and the editor. The article to which your open letter refers was published after careful consideration, and should be viewed in the light of Simon’s extensive and well-sourced reporting from and about the region, as well as the record of the paper, which certainly cannot be accused of acting as a mouthpiece for the US administration. For the record Simon requested the interviews with US officials in Baghdad and not the other way around.
Last November, Simon produced a world exclusive story on the US surge in Iraq (http://www.guardian.co.uk/frontpage/story/0,,1948750,00.html), which was also based on unnamed sources. When we publish on this basis — and we are clear that it is a “source” and not the Guardian’s view — it is because we have made a professional informed decision that the source is trusted and that we can give credence to what they say. Intelligent readers can make their own judgments as to whether we are right to do so in the light of subsequent events. In the case of Simon’s story last week, our correspondent Ghaith Abdul Ahad described a very similar situation about Iranian involvement in Iraq in a report from Basra in mid-May (http://www.guardian.co.uk/frontpage/story/0,,2083389,00.html), though I’m not aware we received any complaints about that.
Simon has travelled to Iran three times in the past 12 months and the Guardian maintains a correspondent there. We regularly report Iran’s official view on these issues. Last Tuesday’s story is just one more part of a jigsaw of the growing power struggle in the region and our editors thought it in the public interest to publish the story. The second part of Simon’s report was on the front page the following day http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,,2085981,00.html
You may be interested to know that my colleague Murray Armstrong reported on discussions about Simon’s story at two of the editor’s morning conferences last week. You can read about them here http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/murray_armstrong/2007/05/iran_iraq_and_sources_of_infor.html
and here http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/murray_armstrong/2007/05/complaints_about_iran_coverage.html
There were also two very active blogs, echoing your sentiments on the Comment is free website, here http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/dd_guttenplan/2007/05/dont_get_fooled_again.html and here http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/dilip_hiro/2007/05/briefing_encounter.html
Siobhain Butterworth, the readers’ editor, was away last week but we have conveyed your concerns to her and she may wish to investigate the issue further.
Best wishes,
